What is a STARTIN?

"Startin" is under wine aficionados an unknown word. It's an old gallon mostly used in Steiermark (Styria) for wine barrels. Originally with a capacity of approx. 566l, 600l are more common today. For example the half "Stück" barrels in the german Rheingau region have a similar size. Startin barrels have several advantages for aging wine. [...]
